SUMMARY: CNC technicians are responsible for operating computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines. The machines are used to create a wide range of products, from car parts to furniture and even medical devices. CNC technicians work closely with engineers and other designers to ensure that the CNC machine is creating the desired products as efficiently as possible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communicating with supervisors regarding work progress, problems, or other issues that arise during the workday
  • Reading blueprints or other instructions to determine how to operate machinery or equipment
  • Monitoring machine performance to ensure that it is working properly and that no damage has been done to it
  • Perform maintenance on equipment to ensure that it continues to run smoothly
  • Using computers to design or modify products based on customers' request or company policies
  • Operating and monitoring computerized controls to ensure that machines are performing tasks correctly
  • Monitoring production rates and adjusting equipment setting to ensure that output goals are met
  • Inspecting materials to ensure that they meet specifications for size, shape, and consistency
  • Repairing equipment when necessary, including replacing worn parts, lubricating bearings, and repairing electrical components
  • Read and interpreting technical blueprints and design models
  • Load raw materials into the CNC machine
  • Inputting the product design into the computer modeling software
  • Choosing and loading the correct cutting tools for the job
  • Adjusting machine settings to the desired product specifications
  • Troubleshooting issues during the manufacturing process
  • Completing quality control tests during the manufacturing stage and on the final product
  • Cleaning and maintaining the machine
  • Training new staff on machine operation procedures

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

  • Reports to: Maintenance Manager
  • Supervises: None

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted for the expected levels of education and experience required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous work experience as a CNC programmer
  • Ability to read and interpret design blueprints
  • Extensive experience with computer modeling software
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and stick to a deadline
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Ability to work after-hours when required

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in aluminum material on a HMC CNC preferred (Makino and Haas)
  • Two years CNC technician experience
  • Experience with HCM operation and manual CNC programming experience preferred
  • Minimum 2 years metal cutting experience preferred

Required Skills:

  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend the English language
  • Ability to work independently, to make decisions, and to keep team members updated on progress as required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required, including training of new employees
  • MS Office® Suite proficiency
  • Problem solving and data analysis skills

Working Conditions:

  • Will have regular exposure to foundry environment including: dust, heat, fumes and noise
